Question 1

Which Audi A3 generation should I look for?

Accepted Answer

The 8P is the cheapest but has the oldest engines and electronics. The 8V moved to the lighter MQB platform and, in later years, offered the virtual cockpit; it is often the sweet spot. The 8Y has a more digital interior and a mild-hybrid option on some petrol engines.

Question 2

Is the Audi A3 plug-in hybrid worth buying?

Accepted Answer

The A3 Sportback e-tron (8V) and the 40 or 45 TFSI e (8Y) pair a petrol engine with a battery charged from the mains. They make sense if you can charge at home or at work; run on petrol alone they are heavier than a plain TFSI. They carry the Crit'Air 1 sticker.

Question 3

How much does the carte grise cost for an Audi A3?

Accepted Answer

The fee is worked out from the fiscal horsepower (chevaux fiscaux) shown on the certificat d'immatriculation, multiplied by a rate set by each region. An S3 or RS3 therefore costs far more to register than a 1.0 or 1.5 TFSI. Check the figure on the document before agreeing a price.

Question 4

What about Audi A3 TDI engines from 2009 to 2012?

Accepted Answer

A3 TDI diesels from those years were part of the Volkswagen group's emissions recall, which updated the engine software. Ask for proof the update was carried out. Diesel A3s of that age get the Crit'Air 2 sticker.
