Calculate the tax in 2025 for a vehicle based on the fuel type, year, and engine emission.
In Portugal, vehicle owners are subject to two main types of taxes: the SV (Vehicle Tax) and the UC (Single Road Tax). The SV is a one-time registration tax paid when a vehicle is first registered in Portugal, whether new or used. It's calculated based on two main components: engine displacement (in cubic centimeters) and CO2 emissions. For used vehicles imported from the EU, there's a progressive discount based on the vehicle's age, ranging from 10% to 80% reduction in tax. Electric vehicles are fully exempt from SV.
The UC is an annual road tax that must be paid for as long as the vehicle remains registered. The calculation method depends on when the vehicle was first registered: vehicles registered before 2007 (Category A) are taxed solely based on engine displacement, while those registered from 2007 onwards (Category B) are taxed based on both engine displacement and CO2 emissions. The UC amount increases with the vehicle's age through an age coefficient, and diesel vehicles typically incur a higher environmental tax component. Like the SV, electric vehicles are exempt from UC.
