Question 1

What is the EA189 update on a Volkswagen diesel?

Accepted Answer

The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189 engines, used roughly from 2009 to 2015, were recalled for a software update after the emissions scandal. Ask the seller or a Volkswagen dealer to confirm from the VIN that it was carried out.

Question 2

Is it worth buying a Volkswagen in Galicia and bringing it to Braga?

Accepted Answer

It can be, but a car from another country pays ISV and must be registered in Portugal before it gets Portuguese plates. The tax, inspection and paperwork can cancel out a lower Spanish price, so do the sums first.

Question 3

Which Volkswagen suits driving in the Minho?

Accepted Answer

On the motorways towards Porto and Spain, a Golf or Passat with a TDI covers long distances economically, while a Polo or T-Roc with a petrol engine suits mostly local driving. An electric ID.3 or ID.4 makes sense if you can charge at home.

Question 4

How is a used Volkswagen registered to a new owner?

Accepted Answer

Ownership changes at the Registo Automóvel, online or at any registry office, with the details of buyer and seller. Before paying, make sure the IUC is up to date and the IPO certificate is still valid.
