Which Mercedes GLA diesel engine is best?

The 2.0 OM654 in the H247 200 d and 220 d is the most refined and the cleanest. In the X156, the 2.1 of the 200 d and 220 d copes with regular motorway use better than the small 1.5 of the 180 d.

Is a diesel Mercedes GLA worth it for town driving?

Rarely: short trips stop the particulate filter from regenerating, which leads to costly repairs. For mostly urban use, a petrol or hybrid GLA is the safer choice.

Does the Mercedes GLA diesel use AdBlue?

The H247 diesels with the OM654 engine do, and the tank is topped up between services. Ignoring the AdBlue warning can stop the engine from restarting.
