Is the Mercedes A-Class 7G-DCT gearbox reliable?

It is a durable gearbox when servicing is kept up, but it can judder or hesitate when pulling away and at parking speeds. On a test drive, spend time in stop-start traffic and ask whether the gearbox software has been updated.

What is the difference between the 7G-DCT and 8G-DCT in the Mercedes A-Class?

The 8G-DCT has eight speeds and comes with the stronger engines, such as the 2.0 diesels in the A 200 d and A 220 d and the A 250 e hybrid. The seven-speed 7G-DCT is fitted to the 1.5-litre A 180 d and most petrol engines.

Does the automatic Mercedes A-Class W169 use the same gearbox?

No: the W169, sold from 2004 to 2012, used Autotronic, a continuously variable transmission, rather than a dual-clutch. It is slower and more sensitive to the condition of its fluid, so the service history matters even more.
