Is the Mazda 2.2 diesel reliable?

It is strong on long journeys, but early versions can suffer oil dilution when particulate filter regenerations are left unfinished. Check the oil level, the service history and whether Mazda's software updates were applied.

Why does the oil level rise in a Mazda diesel?

Incomplete particulate filter regenerations let diesel seep into the oil. An occasional steady-speed run and the low-ash oil Mazda specifies prevent the problem.

Which Mazda models come with a diesel engine?

The 1.5 went into the Mazda2 and CX-3, the 1.8 into the CX-3, CX-30 and latest Mazda3, and the 2.2 into the previous Mazda3, the Mazda6 and the CX-5. The CX-60 gained a 3.3-litre six-cylinder diesel.

From €1,100 to €71,990, half under €11,500 · Typically 2016 with 160,000 km · Most listed: Mazda CX-3, Mazda 6, and Mazda CX-5. Mazda's Skyactiv-D engines run an unusually low compression ratio for a diesel, which makes them smooth and frugal on the open road. The flip side is sensitivity to short trips, which cut particulate filter regeneration short.
