Question 1

What does a Guarda winter do to a used car?

Accepted Answer

Guarda is the highest city in Portugal, and in winter its streets and the A25 are often gritted with salt against ice. Salt speeds up corrosion, so inspect the underbody, brake lines, exhaust and wheel arches, and check that the battery and heater cope with cold mornings.

Question 2

Is four-wheel drive worth it around Guarda?

Accepted Answer

For the city, the A25 and the A23, a front-wheel-drive car on good tyres is usually enough. Four-wheel drive or winter tyres help if you live in a village on high ground or drive up into the Serra da Estrela, where snow can close roads.

Question 3

Can I bring a car from Spain to Guarda through Vilar Formoso?

Accepted Answer

A resident of Portugal must legalise an imported car: it passes an inspection, pays ISV and gets Portuguese plates. A car already registered in Portugal has done all that, so ask for the Portuguese registration certificate before paying.

Question 4

Where is the ownership transfer done for a car bought in Guarda?

Accepted Answer

Ownership is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, the national register, so the transfer can be made online or at any registry office. From then on the new owner pays the annual IUC, and the car's IPO dates stay the same.
