Question 1

Multijet diesel or petrol for driving around Porto?

Accepted Answer

A Multijet diesel suits long, regular runs on the motorways, but repeated short trips in town can clog the particulate filter on newer ones. Like every diesel in Portugal, it also pays an additional IUC charge, so for city use a petrol 500 or Panda is simpler.

Question 2

Is a Panda 4x4 worth it outside Porto?

Accepted Answer

Its four-wheel drive helps on steep, wet and unpaved roads in the district's rural inland. Check that the car really is a 4x4: the later Panda City Cross has the rugged look but front-wheel drive only.

Question 3

Should I worry about rust on a Fiat from the coast?

Accepted Answer

Cars parked for years by the sea, in Matosinhos, Vila do Conde or Póvoa de Varzim, are more exposed to salt air. Look at the sills, underbody, brake lines and exhaust, especially on older Puntos and Pandas.

Question 4

Can I do the transfer and the IPO in Porto?

Accepted Answer

Ownership is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, online or at any registry office, and works the same anywhere in Portugal. The IPO can be done at any approved inspection centre, in Porto or elsewhere.
