Question 1

Is a Fiat Dualogic a real automatic?

Accepted Answer

No. It is a manual gearbox whose clutch and gear changes are worked by a hydraulic actuator, so there is a pause between gears and the clutch wears much as it would on a manual. A dual-clutch or a conventional automatic changes far more smoothly.

Question 2

What should I check on a Fiat Dualogic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

On a test drive, gears should engage without long delays, clunks or a warning on the dashboard, and the car should pull away cleanly on a slope. Ask whether the actuator or the clutch has ever been replaced, as those are the costly parts.

Question 3

Which Fiat automatics are the most common?

Accepted Answer

Among older cars, the 500 and Panda with Dualogic are the most frequent, while the 500X and Tipo come with a dual-clutch gearbox, including the newer mild-hybrid versions. The 1.0 mild-hybrid 500 and Panda are manual only. The 500e is electric, with a single gear, and pays no IUC.

Question 4

Does driving an automatic Fiat matter for my driving licence?

Accepted Answer

If you passed your test in an automatic, your licence carries code 78 and only covers cars without a clutch pedal, which includes Dualogic and electric Fiats. A licence obtained in a manual car covers both.
