Question 1

Does a used electric car pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Battery-electric cars are exempt from IUC and from ISV, so the yearly road tax is not a running cost. They still need the periodic IPO inspection like any other car.

Question 2

How do I check the battery of a second-hand electric car?

Accepted Answer

Ask the dealer or a brand workshop for a state-of-health (SoH) report on the battery. Compare the range you get on a full charge with the range quoted when new, remembering that motorway speeds and cold weather reduce it.

Question 3

Is a used electric car's battery still under warranty?

Accepted Answer

Most manufacturers cover the traction battery for eight years with a mileage cap, and the cover usually passes to the next owner. The date of first registration on the certificado de matrícula tells you how much is left.

Question 4

Where can I charge an electric car in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

At home, a wallbox on a dedicated circuit is the cheapest and most convenient option. Away from home, the public points of the Mobi.E network work with a card or app from an electricity supplier for mobility (CEME), and there are fast chargers along the main routes.
