Is the BMW 1 Series automatic gearbox reliable?

The ZF eight-speed in the F20 and F40 has a good reputation for reliability. BMW calls its oil lifetime fill, but many specialists recommend changing it at around 100,000 km.

What is the difference between the BMW 1 Series F40 automatics?

The seven-speed dual-clutch in the 116d and 118i is quick but can hesitate in slow manoeuvres. The eight-speed torque-converter unit in the 118d, 120d and M135i is smoother in stop-start traffic.

Does an automatic BMW 1 Series use more fuel than a manual?

With the eight-speed gearbox, official consumption is the same as or lower than the manual's. In daily driving, the engine and driving style matter more than the gearbox.
