Which Audi diesel engine is the most reliable?

The common-rail 2.0 TDI, especially the EA288 family fitted from 2012, has the best reputation of Audi's diesels. Older pump-injector 2.0 TDIs are more fragile, and the 3.0 TDI V6 has its timing chain at the back of the engine, which makes replacing it expensive.

Were Audi TDI engines affected by the emissions scandal?

Yes, the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines of the EA189 family, fitted until around 2015, received a software update under a recall. An Audi dealer can confirm from the chassis number whether the work was done.

Is a used Audi diesel worth it in Portugal for low mileage?

Usually not: a TDI's particulate filter needs longer runs to regenerate, and short town trips eventually clog it. For mostly urban driving, a petrol Audi tends to give fewer problems.
