Is a manual Audi A3 more reliable than an S tronic?

As a rule, yes: the A3's manual gearbox is simple and faults are almost always limited to the clutch. The seven-speed dry-clutch S tronic has a history of mechatronics problems that push up running costs.

When does an Audi A3 TDI need a new clutch?

There is no fixed interval, since it depends on driving, but on an A3 TDI the clutch and dual-mass flywheel are usually replaced together. Judder when pulling away or a metallic knock at idle mean it is due.

Is the Audi A3 8Y still available with a manual gearbox?

Yes, the A3 8Y was sold with a six-speed manual on some versions, such as the 30 TFSI and 30 TDI. The more powerful versions and the plug-in hybrids are automatic only.
