Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does the Volvo XC40 have?

Accepted Answer

The Volvo XC40 has had two: an eight-speed torque-converter automatic on the diesels and early four-cylinder petrols, and a seven-speed dual-clutch on the B3 and B4 mild hybrids and the plug-in hybrid. The electric version has no multi-speed gearbox at all.

Question 2

Is a diesel Volvo XC40 automatic still a good buy?

Accepted Answer

A D3 or D4 XC40 automatic remains a sensible choice for long journeys, and the D4 comes with AWD four-wheel drive. It does carry a Crit'Air 2 sticker, which already limits access to some low-emission zones.

Question 3

What should I check on a Volvo XC40 Recharge plug-in hybrid?

Accepted Answer

On an XC40 T5 Recharge, have the battery capacity checked and ask for the original charging cable. A contrôle technique less than six months old is required if the car is over four years old, and the certificat d'immatriculation must be in the seller's name.

Question 4

Which Crit'Air sticker does a petrol or hybrid Volvo XC40 get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid XC40s get the Crit'Air 1 sticker, and the electric version the green zero-emission one. The diesels are rated Crit'Air 2.
