Question 1

What should I check on a petrol Volkswagen with a DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

On a test drive, watch for judder or jerks when pulling away and during slow manoeuvres, and for warning lights. The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG fitted with smaller engines is known for clutch and mechatronic unit wear, so ask for any repair invoices.

Question 2

Which older Volkswagen TSI engines need extra care?

Accepted Answer

Early 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines with a timing chain, fitted until the early 2010s, could suffer chain stretch. A rattle on cold start is a warning sign, and an invoice for a chain replacement is reassuring.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a petrol Volkswagen get?

Accepted Answer

A petrol Volkswagen first registered from 2011 onwards meets Euro 5 or Euro 6 and gets Crit'Air 1. One from 2006 to 2010 gets Crit'Air 2, which some low-emission zones restrict.

Question 4

Does a used petrol Volkswagen need a contrôle technique?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when it is over four years old: the seller must provide a contrôle technique report less than six months old. Younger cars can be sold without one.
