Question 1

Which Peugeot diesel engines are found on used cars?

Accepted Answer

Older models carry HDi engines such as the 1.6 HDi, while Euro 6 cars use BlueHDi units, mainly the 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi alongside the earlier 1.6 BlueHDi. The BlueHDi name signals an engine with a particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction, designed to meet Euro 6.

Question 2

What should I check on a Peugeot with AdBlue?

Accepted Answer

Ask whether the AdBlue tank, pump or heater has already been replaced, as these parts have failed on a number of BlueHDi cars. If the dashboard shows a countdown to a no-start, the repair needs doing before you buy.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a Peugeot diesel get?

Accepted Answer

A diesel registered from 2011 onwards, meeting Euro 5 or Euro 6, receives Crit'Air 2, the best class any diesel can reach. Older diesels fall into Crit'Air 3 or below, which low-emission zones restrict first.

Question 4

Does a used Peugeot diesel need a contrôle technique when sold?

Accepted Answer

Yes, once the car is more than four years old the seller must provide a contrôle technique report less than six months old. The buyer then registers the change of ownership to obtain a new certificat d'immatriculation.

Question 5

Is a diesel Peugeot suited to town driving?

Accepted Answer

On short journeys the particulate filter cannot regenerate, so it clogs and triggers warning lights. A diesel makes most sense for regular motorway or long-distance driving; for town use a petrol or electric Peugeot is often the better match.
