Question 1

Is the Peugeot 408 an SUV or a saloon?

Accepted Answer

Neither quite: it is a fastback crossover, taller than a hatchback, with a sloping rear and a large tailgate. It shares its platform and much of its interior with the 308.

Question 2

What should I know about the 1.2 PureTech engine in the Peugeot 408?

Accepted Answer

The PureTech petrol uses a timing belt running in oil, and premature wear of that belt has been widely reported across Stellantis models. Ask for proof of inspections at the intervals set by Peugeot and check whether the manufacturer's extended cover for this fault still applies.

Question 3

Which Peugeot 408 suits charging at home?

Accepted Answer

The plug-in hybrids cover daily commutes on electricity if charged regularly, and the E-408 runs on electricity alone. Without a place to charge, a petrol or mild-hybrid 408 is the simpler choice.

Question 4

Which Crit'Air sticker does a Peugeot 408 get?

Accepted Answer

The electric E-408 gets the green sticker. Petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions all get Crit'Air 1.

Question 5

Was there an earlier Peugeot 408?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a saloon carried the name before, but it was built and sold mainly outside Western Europe. Used 408s in France are almost all the fastback launched in 2022.
