Question 1

Which Crit'Air sticker does a Mercedes-Benz diesel get?

Accepted Answer

It follows the Euro standard on the carte grise: Euro 6 diesels get Crit'Air 2, Euro 5 Crit'Air 3 and Euro 4 Crit'Air 4. The lower classes are the first to be kept out of a city's low-emission zone.

Question 2

What happens if a Mercedes diesel runs out of AdBlue?

Accepted Answer

Euro 6 BlueTEC and d models need AdBlue to clean their exhaust. The car warns well in advance, and once the tank is empty the engine will not restart until it is refilled.

Question 3

Is a diesel Mercedes suited to city driving?

Accepted Answer

Its particulate filter cleans itself on longer drives at steady speed, which short urban trips rarely allow. A car used mostly in town is more prone to a clogged filter, so ask how the previous owner drove it.

Question 4

What do CDI, BlueTEC and d mean on a Mercedes diesel?

Accepted Answer

They are the badges of successive generations: CDI on older diesels, BlueTEC on those with nitrogen oxide exhaust treatment, and a simple d on later models. The badge hints at the engine's age, but the carte grise gives its exact Euro standard.
