Which diesel engine is best in a used Mercedes E-Class?

The OM654 two-litre four-cylinder in the W213 E 220 d is the best balance of economy and refinement. In the W212, the E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI share the OM651, whose earliest cars had injector problems, so ask whether the injectors have been replaced.

Does a diesel Mercedes E-Class need AdBlue?

Every Euro 6 diesel E-Class uses AdBlue. A fault in the AdBlue system can stop the engine restarting once its countdown runs out, so look for warnings on the dashboard before you buy.

Can a diesel Mercedes E-Class enter French low-emission zones?

A Euro 5 or Euro 6 diesel E-Class carries the Crit'Air 2 sticker. Each zone decides which stickers it admits, so check the rules of the cities where you drive before you buy.
