Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does each Jaguar use?

Accepted Answer

Most XE, XF, F-Pace, F-Type and later XJ models use ZF's eight-speed automatic, while the E-Pace has a nine-speed automatic for its transverse engine. Older models such as the first XF, the XK and the S-Type have six speeds. The I-Pace is electric, with a single fixed reduction gear.

Question 2

What should I watch for on a Jaguar Ingenium diesel?

Accepted Answer

Early 2.0-litre Ingenium diesels had timing chain problems. A full service history with oil changes on time matters here, and a rattle on a cold start is a warning sign.

Question 3

Is the I-Pace an automatic?

Accepted Answer

As an electric car the I-Pace has no conventional gearbox, just a fixed ratio, so it drives like an automatic. It carries the green Crit'Air sticker and may enter every low-emission zone.

Question 4

What should I check on a Jaguar's rotary gear selector?

Accepted Answer

Many XF, XJ, XE and early F-Pace models have a round selector that rises from the centre console at start-up instead of a lever. Check that it rises reliably and turns cleanly, as a faulty selector can stop the car moving off.
