Which BMW 1 Series generation should I buy used?

The F20, built from 2011 to 2019, keeps rear-wheel drive and a wide engine range, especially after the 2015 facelift. The front-wheel-drive F40, sold from 2019, has more rear legroom and a bigger boot.

Is the BMW 1 Series diesel timing chain a weak point?

The N47 diesel in 116d, 118d and 120d models from roughly 2007 to 2015 is known for timing-chain wear, and the chain sits at the gearbox end. A rattle from the back of the engine on a cold start means asking for proof it has been replaced.

Is the BMW 1 Series rear-wheel or front-wheel drive?

The E87 and F20 BMW 1 Series are rear-wheel drive and prized for how they handle. The F40 and F70 switch to front-wheel drive, with xDrive all-wheel drive on the most powerful versions.
