Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does each Alfa Romeo use?

Accepted Answer

The Giulia and Stelvio have ZF's eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The Giulietta and MiTo use the TCT, a six-speed dual-clutch, and the Tonale mild hybrid a seven-speed dual-clutch. Older 147s and 156s were offered with Selespeed, a robotised manual.

Question 2

Is the Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

Well maintained, it gives little trouble. On a test drive, feel for judder when pulling away and manoeuvring; a software update and clutch relearn cure some faults, while a worn clutch costs more.

Question 3

What should I know about Alfa Romeo's Selespeed?

Accepted Answer

Selespeed is a manual gearbox with a hydraulically operated clutch and shift, not a true automatic. The pump and actuator are the known weak points, and hesitant changes or a warning light can mean an expensive repair.

Question 4

Does the ZF automatic in the Giulia and Stelvio need servicing?

Accepted Answer

It is often described as filled for life, but many specialists recommend a fluid change at high mileage. Proof of one counts in favour of a car that has covered a lot of kilometres.
