Does the VW Golf DSG gearbox have problems?

The dry seven-speed DSG, the DQ200, suffered mechatronic failures and judder when pulling away, mostly on older cars. On a test drive, jerks during slow manoeuvres or hesitant shifts are a warning sign.

How often should the DSG oil be changed on a VW Golf?

Oil-bath DSGs, such as the six-speed on the 2.0 TDI, need an oil change at regular intervals, typically around 60,000 km. The dry seven-speed DSG has no clutch oil of that kind to change.

Does the automatic VW Golf GTI use a DSG gearbox?

Yes, the automatic Golf GTI uses the oil-bath dual-clutch DSG, with six speeds on the Golf 5 and Golf 6 and seven on more recent versions. It is a robust gearbox when the oil has been changed on time.

The dry seven-speed, paired with the less powerful engines, is the one whose mechatronics need watching; the oil-bath version on the 2.0 TDI and GTI needs regular oil changes.
