Question 1

Is an electric Smart EQ practical in Porto?

Accepted Answer

For city driving and short commutes around Porto, yes: the EQ fortwo and forfour were designed for urban use and their range is short. They suit buyers who can charge at home or at work rather than those who regularly drive to Lisbon or into the interior.

Question 2

Do electric Smarts pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars are exempt from the IUC road tax, and an imported electric car pays no ISV either. A petrol Smart pays IUC according to its small engine and CO2 emissions, which keeps it among the cheapest cars to tax.

Question 3

What should I check on an older petrol Smart fortwo?

Accepted Answer

Test the automated gearbox from cold and in stop-start traffic: changes should be smooth and the car should not hesitate when pulling away. On the third generation, from 2014, check whether it has the five-speed manual or the twinamic dual-clutch gearbox.

Question 4

How is the Smart forfour different from the fortwo?

Accepted Answer

The forfour has four doors and four seats, and its second generation shares its platform with the Renault Twingo. It is longer than the fortwo but still easy to park, and the better choice if you sometimes carry passengers in the back.

Question 5

How do I transfer a Smart bought in Porto?

Accepted Answer

The change of owner is registered at the Registo Automóvel, online or at a registry desk. Before you sign, check that the IUC is paid and that the IPO inspection is in date for the car's age.
