Is the Smart fortwo cdi economical?

Yes, the fortwo cdi is among the most economical diesel cars ever sold. The trade-off is a low-powered engine better suited to town than to the motorway.

Is the diesel Smart still made?

No, diesel Smarts went out of production in the mid-2010s and the brand is now electric only. Every one for sale is a used car several years old.

What should you check on a used diesel Smart?

Look for oil leaks and check the turbo, the weak points of the small 0.8-litre engine. The automated gearbox should change without hesitating; the clutch and actuator are the parts most often replaced.
