Question 1

Is a manual Skoda Fabia more reliable than a DSG?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes: the Skoda Fabia's manual gearbox is simple and rarely gives trouble, while the seven-speed dry-clutch DSG can judder at low speed and costs more to repair. A manual is also cheaper to maintain, since the clutch is the only wear part. The DSG mainly makes sense for drivers who spend much of their time in traffic.

Question 2

Which engine is best in a manual Skoda Fabia?

Accepted Answer

The three-cylinder 1.0 TSI of the third and fourth generations is the most balanced choice, livelier than the non-turbo 1.0 MPI and still economical. The 1.2 HTP and 1.2 TSI engines of the second generation are known for timing-chain stretch, so listen to a cold start. The three-cylinder 1.4 TDI diesel suits high mileage but is noisier.

Question 3

What should I check on the clutch of a used Skoda Fabia?

Accepted Answer

On a Skoda Fabia used mostly in town, a very high biting point or slipping on a hill means the clutch is near the end of its life. Diesel versions may have a dual-mass flywheel, which rattles at idle when worn. Gears should engage cleanly, with no crunch into second or third.
