Question 1

Is a diesel or a petrol Qashqai better for driving in Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

A diesel's particulate filter needs regular longer runs to clean itself, which short hops across the city rarely give it. For mostly urban use a petrol, mild-hybrid or e-Power Qashqai is the easier choice, while a dCi makes sense for a daily motorway commute from Sintra, Cascais or the south bank of the Tagus.

Question 2

How does the Qashqai e-Power work?

Accepted Answer

On the e-Power, offered on the third generation, the petrol engine only generates electricity and an electric motor always drives the wheels. It never needs plugging in, and in Portugal it pays IUC like any other car, by engine size and CO2 emissions.

Question 3

What should I check on a Qashqai imported from another country?

Accepted Answer

An imported car must have paid ISV and carry Portuguese plates before its ownership can be registered at the Registo Automóvel. Ask for the customs paperwork and the certificate of registration, and check that the VIN on them matches the car.

Question 4

Does the Qashqai's 1.2 DIG-T petrol engine have known problems?

Accepted Answer

Some second-generation cars with the 1.2 DIG-T have been reported to burn oil, so check the level on the dipstick and ask how often it has been topped up. A record of oil changes made on time is the best sign that the engine has been looked after.
