Question 1

Which new saloon cars are sold in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

The choice runs from family saloons such as the Skoda Octavia, Skoda Superb and Mazda3 to executive cars such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. At the top sit the Mercedes S-Class and the Porsche Panamera and Taycan, while the electric options include the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2.

Question 2

Electric or combustion: which new saloon should I choose?

Accepted Answer

An electric saloon suits drivers who charge at home and want to pay no ISV or IUC, and the low, slippery shape helps its range. A diesel or hybrid saloon still makes sense for long trips without charging stops.

Question 3

How much ISV and IUC does a new saloon pay in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

A combustion saloon pays ISV at first registration and IUC every year, both based on engine size and CO2 emissions. Electric saloons are exempt from both, and plug-in hybrids that meet the conditions pay only part of the ISV.

Question 4

Is a new saloon worth buying?

Accepted Answer

A new saloon comes with the full factory warranty and lets you choose the engine and equipment you want. Executive saloons, however, are among the cars that lose most value in their first years, which matters if you change cars early.
