Question 1

Which Mini models count as SUVs?

Accepted Answer

The Countryman is the main one, a five-door with the most room in the Mini range. The Paceman was a three-door coupé version of it and is no longer made, while the Aceman is a smaller, fully electric crossover.

Question 2

Is ALL4 four-wheel drive worth having on a Mini SUV in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

ALL4 helps on wet mountain roads, gravel tracks and steep driveways. For motorway and town driving, front-wheel drive is enough, uses less fuel and has fewer parts to maintain.

Question 3

What should I check on a plug-in hybrid Mini Countryman?

Accepted Answer

Ask how it was charged and check the electric range it shows on a full battery. That range is short, so it only saves fuel if you can plug it in regularly at home or at work.

Question 4

Do electric Mini SUVs pay IUC?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC in Portugal, which covers the electric Countryman and the Aceman. Plug-in hybrids still pay it, as they have a combustion engine.

Question 5

Are there known issues on older Mini Countryman engines?

Accepted Answer

Early petrol engines shared with Peugeot and Citroën are known for timing chain wear. A rattle in the first seconds after a cold start is the warning sign, so ask whether the chain has been replaced.
