Question 1

What is the difference between a Mini One and a Mini Cooper?

Accepted Answer

The One shares the Cooper's body and chassis but has a less powerful engine and, usually, simpler equipment. It is slower but cheaper to buy and to tax, and in daily driving the difference is smaller than the badge suggests.

Question 2

What should I check on an R56 Mini One?

Accepted Answer

On the 2006 to 2013 car, listen at a cold start for a rattle from the timing chain and check the oil level, since these petrol engines can consume oil between services. Ask whether the chain and tensioner have been replaced, and when.

Question 3

Should I avoid an automatic Mini One?

Accepted Answer

On the first generation, built from 2001 to 2006, the CVT automatic has a poor reputation and repairs are costly, so a manual is the safer buy. Later generations use conventional automatics with a better record.

Question 4

Does a Mini One have a spare wheel?

Accepted Answer

Often not: many BMW-era Minis left the factory on run-flat tyres or with a repair kit instead of a spare. Check which tyres are fitted, since run-flats ride harder and cost more to replace.
