Was the Mercedes E-Class sold with a manual gearbox?

Yes, a six-speed manual was offered mainly on four-cylinder W211 and W212 versions such as the 200 CDI and 220 CDI. The V6 models and the vast majority of W213 cars are automatic only.

What should I check on the clutch of a manual Mercedes E-Class?

On the diesels, a worn dual-mass flywheel causes vibration and noise at idle and when pulling away. Replacing it with the clutch is an expensive job, so try a hill start.

Is a manual Mercedes E-Class cheaper to run?

A manual avoids the gearbox oil services and electronic faults of the automatics. On the other hand, fewer buyers want one, which matters when you come to sell.
