Question 1

Which Kia copes best with Porto's hills?

Accepted Answer

An automatic or a hybrid such as the Niro takes the strain out of steep, stop-start climbs, and its regenerative braking recovers energy on the way down. A small Picanto is the easiest to park in the historic centre.

Question 2

Is an older Kia CRDi diesel a sensible buy?

Accepted Answer

It makes sense for regular motorway driving, which keeps the particulate filter clean. For short trips across the city, a petrol or hybrid Kia avoids costly filter and EGR valve trouble.

Question 3

When must a used Kia pass its IPO?

Accepted Answer

A car's first periodic inspection in Portugal falls due four years after registration, then every two years until it is eight, and every year after that. Ask for the latest IPO report, which lists any faults the inspector noted.

Question 4

Does the Kia warranty pass to a second owner?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The seven-year or 150,000 km warranty runs from first registration and stays with the car, provided each service was done on schedule. Check the stamps in the service book before you buy.

Question 5

What if the Kia was imported from Spain?

Accepted Answer

A Kia brought in from another EU country pays ISV before it gets Portuguese plates. If it already carries them, that tax is settled, and the purchase is simply a transfer registered at the Registo Automóvel.
