Question 1

Which Renegade engine is the best buy?

Accepted Answer

For high mileage, the 1.6 MultiJet diesel is the common choice and is front-wheel drive. The 1.3 FireFly petrol suits mixed driving, and the 4xe makes sense if you can charge at home, since short trips can then run on electricity.

Question 2

What are the Renegade's known weak points?

Accepted Answer

On the 1.4 MultiAir petrol, the MultiAir valve actuator can fail, showing as rough running and a warning light. The nine-speed automatic on four-wheel-drive versions has drawn complaints about jerky shifts, often eased by software updates, and diesels used only in town clog their particulate filter.

Question 3

Does every Renegade have four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

No, most are front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive came with the 2.0 MultiJet and some petrols, on the off-road Trailhawk, and on every 4xe, where an electric motor drives the rear wheels.

Question 4

What should I check on a Renegade 4xe?

Accepted Answer

Ask how the car was charged and check that it still runs in electric mode on a full battery. The small battery gives a short electric range, so it only saves fuel if it is plugged in regularly; a 4xe that was never charged has lived as a heavy petrol car.
