Question 1

Is Cupra a separate brand from SEAT?

Accepted Answer

Cupra became a brand of its own in 2018, having previously been the name of SEAT's most powerful versions. Older SEAT Leon Cupra models are therefore SEAT-badged, while later cars carry the Cupra badge and their own model names such as Formentor and Born.

Question 2

What should I check on a Cupra DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive the car from a standstill and in slow traffic, where a worn dual-clutch box shows judder, slipping or hesitant changes. Wet-clutch versions need periodic oil changes, so ask for the invoices; a mechatronic fault is a costly repair.

Question 3

Is the Born an automatic?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Like most electric cars, the Born and the Tavascan have no gearbox in the usual sense, only a single-speed reduction gear, so there is no clutch to wear. As fully electric cars they pay no IUC in Portugal, and an imported one pays no ISV.

Question 4

What is different about a used Cupra e-Hybrid?

Accepted Answer

The Leon, Formentor and Terramar e-Hybrid pair a petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery charged from the mains, driving through a DSG. Check that the charging cable comes with the car and that it pulls away and drives on electric power alone. An imported plug-in hybrid can qualify for reduced ISV, depending on its electric range and emissions.
