Question 1

What should I check on an older Citroën C5 with Hydractive suspension?

Accepted Answer

The Hydractive system on many C5s built up to 2017 uses pressurised spheres that lose their charge with age, leaving the ride hard or the car sagging. Check that it rises to its normal height after the engine starts, and ask when the spheres were last replaced.

Question 2

Is a BlueHDi diesel worth it for commuting around Porto?

Accepted Answer

On regular motorway runs it is economical, and that kind of driving also keeps its particulate filter clean. Make sure no AdBlue warning appears, as faults in the tank or pump are a known weak point, and remember that diesels pay an additional IUC charge.

Question 3

Are Citroën parts easy to find in the north of Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Citroën shares engines and many parts with Peugeot and the other Stellantis brands, so dealers and independent garages around Porto know the cars well. The Berlingo is even built in Portugal, at Mangualde.

Question 4

How is a Citroën bought in Porto registered to me?

Accepted Answer

The change of owner is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, which is national, online or at any registry office. From then on you pay the annual IUC, and the IPO inspection can be done at any approved centre.
