What is the problem with the Citroën C4 1.2 PureTech engine?

Its timing belt runs in oil and can break down, shedding debris that blocks the oil pump pick-up. Check that the belt was replaced on time and that the oil used meets the maker's specification.

Is the Citroën C4 1.6 THP engine reliable?

The 1.6 THP is known for timing chain stretch and carbon build-up on the valves, especially with neglected servicing. A metallic rattle from cold and heavy oil use are signs to walk away.

Is a petrol Citroën C4 a better buy than a diesel?

For low mileage or mostly town driving, yes: it needs no particulate filter or AdBlue and pays less IUC road tax. For lots of motorway miles, the BlueHDi uses clearly less fuel.
