Question 1

Is there a BYD with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

No. BYD's European range is made up of electric cars and plug-in hybrids, none of which uses a conventional manual gearbox. Any used BYD in Portugal will be a two-pedal car.

Question 2

Do electric BYD cars pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC, the annual road tax, so an electric BYD pays nothing. The DM-i plug-in hybrids do pay it, calculated on engine size and CO2 emissions.

Question 3

What should I check on a used BYD battery?

Accepted Answer

Ask a BYD workshop to read the battery's state of health, and look at the charging history if the seller has it. BYD uses its own lithium iron phosphate Blade battery, which tolerates regular charging to full better than many other chemistries.

Question 4

Do electric BYD cars need the IPO?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Electric and hybrid cars go through the IPO, Portugal's periodic inspection, on the same schedule as any passenger car: first at four years old, then every two years until eight, and every year after that.
