Question 1

Does a diesel BMW make sense for driving around Viseu?

Accepted Answer

It does if much of your driving is on the A25 or A24, where the particulate filter gets the long runs it needs to clean itself. A car used mostly for short trips across town is better as a petrol or plug-in hybrid.

Question 2

What should I check on a BMW imported into Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Confirm that ISV was paid and that the car carries Portuguese plates registered at the Registo Automóvel in the seller's name. Ask for the import paperwork and the inspection report from its Portuguese registration.

Question 3

How much IUC does a BMW pay?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, IUC is set by engine size and CO2 emissions, so a six-cylinder pays clearly more each year than a 318d or 320d. Fully electric BMWs such as the i3 or iX are exempt.

Question 4

Is the timing chain on the BMW N47 diesel a real concern?

Accepted Answer

On the 2.0 four-cylinder diesel used from about 2007 to 2011, the chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine and can stretch. A rattle at idle is the warning sign, and a receipt for a replaced chain is worth asking for.
