Which gearbox does the BMW 5 Series automatic use?

From the F10 generation onwards it is the ZF eight-speed automatic, sold as Steptronic, with a Sport version on some models. The E60 before it used a six-speed ZF automatic.

Should the gearbox oil be changed on a BMW 5 Series automatic?

BMW presents the fill as long-life, but many specialists, and ZF itself, recommend changing the oil and filter at regular intervals. A car with a documented change and smooth, prompt shifts is the safer buy.

Was the BMW 5 Series sold with a manual gearbox?

Yes, some engines in earlier generations, including the F10 520d, were offered with a six-speed manual in Europe, but they are rare. The current generation is automatic only.

The earlier E60 used a six-speed automatic that is less forgiving of neglected oil.
