Is the BMW 3 Series automatic gearbox reliable?

The ZF eight-speed in the F30 and G20 has a good reputation and handles high mileages well. BMW calls its oil a lifetime fill, but many specialists recommend changing it to extend the gearbox's life.

What are the signs of gearbox trouble in an automatic BMW 3 Series?

Clunks when selecting D or R, harsh shifts from cold and hesitation on downshifts are the most common signs. On a test drive, try the manual mode and gentle pull-aways, and ask for a record of any oil change.

Does an automatic BMW 3 Series use more fuel than a manual?

Not significantly: the eight-speed has long ratios and often matches or beats the manual's consumption. On the E90, the six-speed automatic used slightly more.
