How can I tell if a BMW 1 Series dual-mass flywheel is worn?

Vibration at idle, a knock when switching off and judder when pulling away are the usual signs. On a high-mileage diesel 1 Series, ask whether the flywheel and clutch have already been replaced.

Is a manual BMW 1 Series cheaper than an automatic?

Usually yes, because the automatic was an expensive option and used prices reflect it. A manual also avoids the costlier repair of a faulty automatic gearbox.

Was the BMW 120d available with a manual gearbox?

Yes, in the E87 and F20 generations, which offered the 120d with a six-speed manual. In the F40, the 120d comes only as an automatic with xDrive all-wheel drive.
