Question 1

Should I choose an 8V or an 8Y Audi A3?

Accepted Answer

The 8V was built until 2020 and costs less to buy. The 8Y brings a digital cockpit as standard, newer driver assistance and, on some petrol models with S tronic, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Question 2

Is an S line too firm for Porto's cobbles?

Accepted Answer

The sports suspension and large wheels with thin tyres feel noticeably firm on cobbled streets. Drive over the old town's rough surfaces before buying, listening for rattles and checking the rims for kerb damage.

Question 3

How does the S tronic cope with Porto's hills?

Accepted Answer

The dual-clutch gearbox on lower-powered versions can judder during slow hill starts. Try one on a steep street; the hill-hold function should stop the car rolling back.

Question 4

Is a diesel A3 still worth it in Porto?

Accepted Answer

It suits regular motorway runs on the A1 or A28, but short city trips load up its particulate filter. Diesels also pay an IUC surcharge in Portugal, which favours petrol for low annual mileage.
